Cosmic Jazz from Outer Space

Directed by Marshall Allen
Why you should see this show…

Lead by 94 year old saxophonist, Marshall Allen, Sun Ra Arkestra is a futuristic free jazz ensemble founded in the mid-1950s by jazz legend, Sun Ra. Their music – essentially an extended jam session – swings between jazz, honky tonk, soul, ragtime and blues, among a dozen other genres, frequently underlined by sci-fi noise effects. Allen is regarded as one of the best freeform sax players alive and his instrument appears as simply an extension of his body, soaring between freestyle improvisation and subtle rhythms. Joined by special guest Nathan Paul and The Admirables, this show will fill your soul with hypnotic jazz and funk.

Sun Ra Arkestra Bio
In the half-between world,

Dwell they: The Tone Scientists

In notes and tone

They speak of many things…

The tone scientists:

Architects of planes of discipline

Mathematically precise are they:

The tone-scientists

– Sun Ra

Sun Ra was one of the great jazz men of the twentieth century, a visionary pioneer of a singular type of futuristic free jazz which was widely overlooked during his lifetime but is being re-evaluated as culturally significant by many artists and critics today. Having left the planet in 1993, Sun Ra’s band, the Arkestra, have continued to record, compose and tour ever since and are now lead by the 94-year-old saxophonist Marshall Allen, himself a member of the Arkestra since 1957. Allen attributes his fantastic health at 94 years old to the “spiritual” and “healing” effects of their music. Allen has not only devoted his life to playing music but also to living, breathing and sharing the various philosophies Sun Ra impressed upon him. Their music – essentially an extended jam session – swings between jazz, honky tonk, soul, ragtime and blues, among a dozen other genres, frequently underlined by sci-fi noise effects.

Nathan-Paul & The Admirables Bio
Hailing from the funky rust belt town of Cleveland, they have created a live experience that is all about good vibes! Going to an Admirables’ show is a party. Bold and funky earth tones from the saxes at the front lines lead the band through many twists and turns. Hypnotic grooves from the rhythm section get heads bobbing and bodies moving. An Admirables’ show is a healing and exciting experience!

Whether The Admirables are jamming on a trap groove or laying down the funk, their #1 goal is to get you moving. The band calls upon many of the feel good muses of groove music such as Kool & The Gang, J-Dilla, James Brown, Erykah Badu, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, and many more. As the old adage goes “music is food for the soul.” The Admirables will get you fed!
