Cleveland Opera Theatre presents Ghosts of Gatsby

The regional premiere of this new one-act opera by Evan Mack and Joshua McGuire. A tale of marriage and madness. Zelda and Scott Fitzgerald are in the French Riviera, 1924. Scott, obsessed by work on The Great Gatsby, is jealous of Zelda’s extramarital affair, while Zelda is smothered by the alcoholic Scott. In a fit of rage, Scott locks Zelda in a bedroom. She has visions of her younger and older selves. As the argument with Scott resumes and intensifies, Scott strikes Zelda and she attempts to dismiss the apparitions as unreal; but the oldest Zelda dismisses her. Zelda wakes; the entire scene has been a dream on her deathbed, locked in a burning insane asylum.

The Ghosts of Gatsby is 1st place winner of the 2019 National Opera Association (NOA) Dominick Argento Chamber Opera Competition is a co-production between Baldwin Wallace Conservatory and Cleveland Opera Theater. BW will serve as institutional host for the NOA Conference 2020 to be held in Cleveland, OH January 8- 11, 2020. This production will also launch the Cleveland Opera Theater {NOW} Fest ’20 in residence at BW and planned in conjunction with the NOA Conference.
